Derek Stoll

Derek Stoll obtained a Bachelor of Music degree in Composition from the University of Calgary. He has composed works for concert band, jazz band, small ensembles and solo instruments. He studied jazz and brass performance at the Banff Centre. He was commissioned to compose and arrange for the Canadian Brass, trumpet virtuoso Jens Lindemann, and the Calgary Stampede Grandstand show

He has lectured at Boston University, presenting a workshop to the Jazz History course, and a masterclass for piano majors on improvisation.

He was director of the joint U of A/Grant MacEwan College big band in the early 1990s. He was Managing Director for MusiCamrose from 1989 - 1995.

He has been teaching jazz piano at Mount Royal University in Calgary since 2001, and has taught jazz theory at the University of Calgary. He has performed with numerous world-class musicians and active in Alberta's music scene as a performer, teacher and adjudicator.

He was a primary consultant for Conservatory Canada's Contemporary Idioms syllabus, and has examined for C.C. since 2006.

Derek has been involved with CASSA from its inception. He has served as treasurer, has taught or coached at various of the workshops and even attended CASSA pedagogy courses. He composed the music for the CASSA commissioned musical, "A Vampire's Tale".
